What is chess?
Chess is a strategic board game, played with two players, the goal of chess is to put your opponent’s king in a position where they can’t escape(checkmate).
The different chess pieces:
- The Rook – can move any number of squares horizontally or vertically. Players each have two rooks, one in each corner on their side of the board.


- The Knight – moves in an L shape across the board. The knight can jump over pieces to reach it’s destination. Each player has two knights.


- The Bishop – can move in any direction diagonally. Each player starts the game with two bishops.


- The Queen – the most powerful chess piece, it can move any number of squares vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Each player starts the game with one queen.


- The Pawns – moves one square at a time, can capture any piece one square diagonally forward. Each player has eight pawns.


- The King – the most important chess piece, can move one square at a time in any direction. Each player has one king.


One of the most interesting chess players:
François-André Philidor was born in September 7, 1726 and died in August 31 ,1795. He was a French composer and a chess Grandmaster . Here is a short audio about him and one of his games:
